Course overview

The purpose of the training for this program is to provide Anaesthetic technician/Technologist, middle health manpower to work with Anaesthetist physicians and nurses in carrying out hospital theatre procedures.

The program is being designed to expose student to both theoretical and clinical training in blocks. Clinical training is fully under Anaesthesia department of the Federal Medical Center, Bida and other approved hospital to broader the trainee’s working in an operating theatre.

Duration: The program runs for three (3) years (6 semesters) with both clinical and classes on the formal training

Entry requirements

Applicants should possess SSCE WAEC/NECO/GCE/NABTEB ordinary level with minimum of five (5) credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or any other science subject at no more than two sittings.

Objective of the program

 At the end of the programme, the students are expected to be able to:

1. Assist with the application of various types of Anaesthesia equipment
2. Sterilizing and clearing of Anaesthesia equipment
3. Troubleshooting, maintenance and recording of inspection for equipment
4. Assembling and calibrating medical devices for use.
5. Ensure the participation for effective team work during theatre procedures.
6. Ensure safe clinical practice under supervision of the Anaesthesologist.
7. Ensure application of appropriate concepts and competencies during theatre procedure under supervision.

Career opportunities

• Following the practices of counties with successful commensurate programs, the graduate works under the direct supervision of an Anaesthetist/ Anaesthesiologist
• Employment is usually found with a hospital operating suite, intensive care units, a community hospital or multi-specialty hospitals.
